Sometimes grandparents will tie their bird watching vacation in with a visit to grandkids. The bird watching community is full of retired people who are finished with their jobs and finally have ample time to devote to their hobby. Those who are grandparents may plan a bird watching vacation in upstate New York and drop down to see their grandkids who live in the city on the way back home. The beautiful thing about bird watching vacations is that they can be done anywhere.
Learning how to bird watch
Learning how to bird watch before you go on bird watching vacations isn’t difficult…if you have patience. If you wait long enough in your backyard or hide beneath a shrub in the Nicaraguan mountains long enough, you will get to see some very special birds. Whether those birds come before you fall asleep or your knees buckle, is an entirely different matter.
You can work on your patience and you bird watching skills before you go by devoting several hours to honing your skills in your own backyard, local park or other outdoor space, searching and waiting for birds to fall into the scope of your binoculars.
Supplies for learning
To learn how to bird watch you really only need a few things. You should have some binoculars that are not higher than a power of seven. This is a power that’s high enough for you to see the birds without distorting them. There are all kinds of binoculars out there, but you have to shop around. You can even buy binoculars that will work well with your glasses. Any kind of binoculars can accompany you on your bird watching vacation.
For your bird watching vacation you will also need a field guide. If your home is in an area that is completely different than where you will be birding, you’ll need to get two field guides. One for home and one for the vacation. A field guide gives you detailed, accurate information about the birds in a specific area. Reading these guides will help you find birds when you decide to go on your bird watching vacation.
