Feline diarrhea can mean lots of different things ranging from depression to illness. Normally, a feline's feces are firm and a darkish brown color. Most felines have bowel movements twice a day. But when a cat is ill or depressed, it will develop diarrhea. If it continues for a few days, take the cat to the vet. Diarrhea is not normal and the causes need to be examined as soon as possible because the problem could be very serious. It will continue until the cat gets medical attention or in some cases, the cat dies.
Diarrhea affects every living animal. A new house, death of another pet or human family member, or old age can cause feline diarrhea. If the diarrhea persists, take the cat to the vet. If nothing seems to be wrong, then spending more time with the cat might be necessary. Buy the cat some new toys, a warm blanket, or its favorite cat treats. Spend some time on the couch with the cat. Make the cat feel as comfortable as possible.
Clean out the litter box often and make sure it is in the same place all the time. Sometimes new surroundings can confuse and frighten a cat. The feline diarrhea should stop once the cat adjusts to its new home. Replacing one animal with another is not a good idea at first. If the cat is grieving over another cat's death, let it grieve. After a few months, when the cat has adjusted, then think about getting the cat a new friend. Cats need companions and another cat should help.
Another reason feline diarrhea occurs is when the cat food has been switched. Switching any animal's food is not a good idea. Their bodies get used to a certain type of food and their digestive tract sometimes cannot handle the trauma of new pet food. It is not a good idea to switch from dry cat food to wet cat food. This will cause feline diarrhea. Go back to the original cat food. This will cause the diarrhea to go away. If it doesn't, seek the
medical attention of a vet. This could signify tumors or ulcers in the stomach lining. Not having enough to drink is another reason cats suffer from feline diarrhea. Always replenish water at least twice a day. This will prevent diarrhea from occurring. If it doesn't, a vet can give advice about what to do.
Diarrhea leads to dehydration which will lead to death. This is especially true of kittens. They cannot go without water for long. Switching from kitten food to cat food too quickly can also cause diarrhea. It is important to find out the cause and try to treat it before it is too late. Once dehydration has set in, it is difficult to recover as this will cause the organs in the cats body to shrivel and stop working. Feline diarrhea is serious and needs to be stopped as soon as possible.
