ImageWhat Causes Dog Bites?

Dog Bites occur for a number of reasons. They may bite as a defensive reaction, because they are scared or feel threatened, because they have been treated badly, because someone has entered their territory, or as a reaction to someone taking their food or toys from them.

The owner of the dog must watch him closely and help the dog deal with stressful situations so he does not resort to biting.

Preventing Dog Bites

As the dog's owner, you have a great responsibility to keep the dog in good health by making sure he is up to date on vaccinations, training the dog (and enlisting professional help as needed) and socializing the dog so that he knows how to behave around all types of people and animals. Until the dog is fully trained and can be trusted, however, it is important to keep the dog on a short leash, don't allow kids to pull on his ears and warn passerbys of his behavior problems. Leaving your dog to rely on his own instincts can be a recipe for disaster.

Treating Dog Bites

Dog Bites can range from mild to severe and can require anything from a small bandage to a number of stitches. If bitten, wash the areas with soapy water, put on antibiotic ointment, cover the open wound with gauze and bandages and then elevate the area. Call your doctor if the Dog Bites are severe or if there is a chance the dog may have rabies. Report the incident to your local police and animal control center as well.

The Legal Definition of Dog Bites

Legally, a bite refers to an instance when there is broken skin, bleeding or the dog's mouth closes in over a person. Technically, even if your dog doesn't cause permanent damage to the victim, the victim will have a good case against you and will be able to recover damages if the dog has tried to sink his teeth into him.

Unfortunately, even if provoked, a dog that bites risks being put to sleep and the owner can be sued by the victim. With appropriate training, socialization and awareness on the owner's part dog bites can often be avoided.
