Jumping Dog

A jumping dog can be quite a nuisance for pet owners who have to deal with this type of animal. This type of dog can be quite difficult to train and will be viewed as an annoyance to anyone he comes in contact with. The whole idea is to figure out why your dog is a jumper and then figure techniques to teach your dog that this behavior is wrong.

Whether you are the owner of a jumping dog or know a friend that is, you know how big of a problem it can be. First of all, it is difficult to bring small children around this dog for fear of the dog injuring the child. Having guests come over is a pain because you have to lock the jumping dog up in another room or his kennel. You want your dog to be a part of your family experience but he just won’t listen. Do you feel that you are at the end of your rope? Well, you don’t have to feel that way because there is help out there.

First of all, why does your dog jump all over the place and all over people? One main reason is that they are looking for attention. Is your dog locked up all day, not getting enough attention? Jumping is also an instinct as a puppy to get the attention of older adult animals for food or love. Your dog could just be a happy pup and this is the way they show excitement. But, whatever the case may be, it is obviously not working for you.

Your first option is to seek the help of a trainer. If at all possible, seek the trainer at the earliest time in your dog’s life. As they say, it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but don’t worry it is not impossible. A trainer can help teach you how to reinforce the behaviors of your jumping dog in both a positive and negative way.

If you don’t have the resources for a trainer then you need to do some research. First, try and figure out what triggers your dog to jump. Is it everything? Is it just the doorbell? Does he do it to everyone? Does he only do it to new people he meets? Once you figure out the trigger, you can move from there. There are several techniques you can implement. There’s blocking with hands or hip, backing away, grabbing the collar, or holding the dog in an upright position when he jumps.

Whatever method you choose is totally up to you and depends on the type of dog you have. The energy level of your dog just might be the culprit. You should try walking or running your dog around the neighborhood to burn some excess energy. A jumping dog is not a bad dog; he just needs some guidance, discipline and a patient owner.
