- Defining Characteristics

  1. Temperament:

    Fairly even-tempered, smart dogs
  2. Behavior:

Well-mannered, American Foxhounds are instinctively gentle because of their very strong pack member mentality.
  3. Habits:

They can bay, so keep in mind if your neighbors might object. They are in love with scent of all kinds, and are really happy in a pack of other dogs. An American Foxhound should not be left alone for too long, or without stimulation. Because of their intelligence, they can get easily bored.

The American Foxhound travels well, although they will need a great big run when they get to their destination. They may well howl, however.
  5. Getting Along With Other Pets and Children:

American Foxhounds get along well with children, but really well with other dogs.

- How to Choose

  1. What to Look for in a Healthy Puppy:

Clear eyes, lovely soft coat, and inquisitive nature.
  2. What You Will Need For A New Puppy:

An appropriate crate, door gates and backyard dog fencing will keep him safe. Lots of toys and room to run will keep him happy.
  3. Puppy-Proofing your House:

Puppies are small and explore a lot. Be sure that there is anything that your dog can get into, pull out, or chew is safe for him.
