  1. Type of Competition:

    The Minnesota Horse Show is a twelve day show, held in August and ending with the Labor Day. It is one of the shows incorporated within the events of the Minnesota State Fair. The horse expo is a fundraiser for the Minnesota Horse Council. The horse show itself is a 4H horse show and uses no other than 4H methods of judging.
  2. Location:

    The Minnesota State Fair is conducted at the State Fair Coliseum. The Horse Show is a part of a group of events held at the State Fair.
  3. History:

    The Minnesota Horse Expo began in 1982 at the State Fairgrounds. It has earned well over $2,250,000 for the Minnesota state revenue and has attracted more than 55,000 people in the last year alone.
  4. Sanctioned:

    Minnesota Horse Shows are sanctioned by organizations such as the United Barrel Racing Association, Minnesota Barrel Racers Association, Minnesota Rodeo Association, Northern Region Futurities, etc.
  5. Entrance Procedure:

    The State Fair Horse Show of Minnesota can be entered by filling premium books, entry forms and stalling forms that are available at the site a few months in advance. The State Fair sets up a competition website, which can be used to enter the show. It will have two departments, for English and Western horses. They will also provide an email to correspond directly. In order to be eligible, the horse must possess at least a blue level in all classes entered at the county level. This will enable the horse to participate in the state level. However, if the participant is recommended by the county external educator, then there is no need of a county level rating.
  6. Classes:

    The first three days are devoted to the events of the English horse breeds. These horse breeds will include hunters, jumpers, Saddlebred horses, Arabian horses, Morgans, miniature horses and draft horses such as Clydesdales, Percherons, and Belgians. English show horses depart on the fourth day and the PRCA rodeos come in. The western show horses enter in the eighth day, which include breeds like quarter horses, paint horses and saddle club horses.
  7. Judging:

    Horses are judged in many events such as equitation, trailing, dressage, English pleasure, Western horsemanship, Western riding, Western pleasure, halter, hunter, reining and young classes among other categories.
  8. Awards:

    Prizes are given to 13 English horses and 4 western horses which participate at different times: draft horse, miniature, paint horse, quarter horse, shire, Percheron, Clydesdale and Belgian halter classes and the saddleclub classes.
