1. Type of Competition:

   This is a show especially for displaying the skills of rocky mountain horses.

2. Location:

   The International Rocky Mountain Horse Show is held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Kentucky every September. There are also many regional Rocky Mountain horse shows, which are held at various places across the country. Some of the prominent places where regional Rocky Mountain horse shows are conducted are the La Plata County Fairgrounds at Durango, Mesa County Fairgrounds at Grand Junction and National Western Complex at Denver, all of which are in Colorado.

3. History:

   The Rocky Mountain Horse Association was founded in 1986. The purpose of this association was to maintain and develop the breed of Rocky Mountain horses. In order to popularize them, they started conducting the International Rocky Mountain Show. Today, several regional organizations all over the world, and especially in Canada and America, are also conducting exclusive rocky mountain horse shows.

4. Sanctioned:

   The show is sanctioned by the Rocky Mountain Horse Association. The prime purpose of sanctioning this show is to make the Rocky Mountain horse breed popular all over the world.

5. Entrance Procedure:

   Before entering a Rocky Mountain Horse show, you have to get your horse registered with the Rocky Mountain Horse Association. This association requires many qualifying rules.

6. Classes:

   Rocky mountain horse shows include only registered horses with the Rocky Mountain Horse Association. There are no class divisions among these horses for the shows.

7. Judging:

   Rocky mountain horses are adjudged for several events such as English pleasure, western pleasure, halter or in hand training, equitation, trailing, dressage, English showmanship, western showmanship, hunter, reining and young class. Judges will look for not only the skill of the horse in these events, but also the care taken by the exhibitor in the grooming of the horse. Several of these events judge the obedience level of the horse and the communication that the rider is able to make with the horse. Horses must meet the standards of the Rocky Mountain Horse Association in order to qualify for judging.

8. Awards:

   Rocky mountain horses are awarded different 'best of' prizes in each event. The most coveted award is the 'Best of Show' title. The horses that win awards automatically become eligible for the next year's show. Awards are also given to the best horse exhibitors.
