Heating
A good heat source is a basic element for any reptile or amphibian's terrarium. A full-spectrum incandescent bulb will provide heat as well as lighting for your pet. Having this type of lighting offers the additional bonus of providing the ultra-violet rays needed to stimulate the synthesis of vitamin D3 in your pet. Vitamin D3 helps your pet's body absorb and utilize calcium for good, strong bone growth. Many species enjoy a thermal gradient in their terrarium. A thermal gradient offers more heat on once side and less on the other. Basking lamps, ceramic heating elements, under-tank heat sources or just the central heating unit of the building can all provide adequate heating. Install a wide-range thermometer in your terrarium so you can monitor its temperature and be sure it's appropriate and healthful.
Lighting
If you opt for a full-spectrum incandescent light, remember that it will offer both heat and light. This option offers enough light for many animals, but not for lizards that require hours of natural sunlight. Animals with high light requirements will do better under fluorescent lights. If possible, providing full natural sunlight is the best way for your pet to get the full-spectrum light he needs.
