Read About Bird Cages

Bird cages are the most basic element needed to keep your bird alive and well. Here's all you need to know about bird cages.

Why do I need a bird cage?

There are bird owners that let their birds roam freely about their house, but you have to have a very unique, secure house to let your bird roam and keep it safe. Bird cages keep birds safe from cats, dogs and fans. Bird cages also keep birds safe from escaping out of doors or windows. They even protect them from windows, which is one bird hazard that many bird owners never think of as a hazard. Birds don't understand the concept of glass so when they see a window, they think they can go through it. When they try, they smack into the window and the impact can seriously harm them.

Another household hazard that bird cages protect against is hot stoves and water. A bird has no idea what a stove is and if it's flying around, it might decide to land on the stove or on a hot pot and then, well, we don't want to think about what would happen in that situation. Birds, especially little birds, can drown in very small amounts of water so keeping them in a bird cage will protect them from finding a water source that might end their life.

So what kind of bird cages should I buy?

Ah, the million dollar question. There is no one right answer to this question because like dogs, different birds have different needs. However, we can outline some general rules concerning things that every bird needs to have in bird cages.

Every bird needs the largest bird cage that you can find for that bird. Birds need to get exercise and they exercise by flying, so you need a cage that they can fly around. Birds tend to fly from side to side rather than up and down so having long bird cages is a good idea. Because birds fly from side to side, it's better to get a square cage as opposed to a circular cage. Rounded cages even make some nervous and a bird shouldn't feel nervous in it's home environment.

Also, every bird owner needs to pay attention to the size of the wire on the bird cages. If you have a small bird you don't want to buy bird cages with largely spaced cage wire because it might escape.

Do birds always have to stay in bird cages?

Certainly not! Birds like to roam around and they're very social so they love to come out of the cage. Just make sure that before you let the bird out, the room is secure. Check for all of the hazards that we mentioned before and then let your bird out. Bird cages are useful, but their use doesn't mean the bird can't have any fun!
