Read About Cat Bird Feeder

All bird feeders are attractive to neighborhood cats, but you can do a few things to make the feeders less attractive. Here's what you need to know about a cat bird feeder.

What is a cat bird feeder?

No. There really isn't a cat bird feeder that is used for birds and cats. The fact of the matter is, cats will always be attracted to any kind of bird feeder that you put up. Cats love birds. They love to watch them. They love to eat them and they love to chase them. So, if you want to encourage birds to return to your bird feeder, make your bird feeder more of an anti-cat bird feeder.

You can show birds that you're bird feeder is not a cat bird feeder by placing it in areas where neighborhood cats cannot reach it. When you're looking for a place to put up your bird feeder, keep in mind that cats are crafty, quick, agile and they can climb. That means you should stop yourself from hanging your bird feeder on a wooden post or tree because a cat can easily climb up the wood and pester the feeding birds.

A good alternative would be to place a metal poll in the middle of your yard and perch a bird feeder or bird house on top. If you decide to do this, install a pole that is high enough that a cat can't jump up to the feeder. A cat may try to get up the pole, which will initially scare away the birds, but once the birds understand that they are not at a cat bird feeder, they will come back to the feeder and munch.

Cat bird feeders as decoration

Some bird watchers who have a sense of humor, albeit a sick one, will buy bird feeders or bird baths that look like cats or have silhouettes of cats lurking around the corner. Cat bird feeders often times place the feeder opening at the cat's mouth to make it look like the birds are willingly crawling into the cat's mouth. A cat bird bath will have a statute of a cat standing right next to the bird feeder. Though these kinds of decorations and cat bird feeders may be entertaining to guests, they will not do anything to attract or deter birds from visiting your bird feeder or bird bath.
