Because of their relative low maintenance, it’s often not too difficult to find a family member or friend who will agree to check in on your cat every day while you’re gone. They don’t tend to suffer from loneliness to the extent that dogs do, and most are just fine as long as their food and water bowls are filled and their litter box is cleaned periodically.

If you can’t find a friend to stop in, however, you may need to hire the services of a professional cat sitter. Ask around for names of reputable people, and always get a list of references to follow up on so you can be sure you’re dealing with someone trustworthy.

In some cases, a long-term care situation is needed and then it might be easier to check your cat into a boarding facility. If you find a good one, these facilities have the benefit of being staffed by professionals round the clock, and they also have quick access to emergency care if it becomes necessary.

Find a reputable boarding facility by asking fellow cat lovers who they’ve used in the past. Or, ask your vet or professional pet trainer for some suggestions. You can also go online and do your research. Visit the facility before making a final decision. Check out the conditions, interview the people who work there, and ask about any special needs or care your cat may require.
