Read About Dog Miscellaneous Breeds

Some dogs don't fit the most obvious categories that are listed by the American Kennel Club, but they can still Imagecompete in the miscellaneous level. Here's everything you need to know about Dog Miscellaneous Breeds.

What is a Miscellaneous Breed?

Dogs that cannot compete to earn championship points in categories such as sporting, hounds, working, terriers, toys, non-sporting, and herding can still have a place in the AKC. Breeds like the Beauceron, Plott, Tibetan Mastiff, Redbone Coonhound, Finnish Hound, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, Lhaso Apso and the Bulldog are difficult to place in any other category. They are mainly companion dogs. But they are on the list of miscellaneous dogs and are recognized by the AKC with the ability to earn Imageawards in obedience, tracking and agility, along with Junior Showmanship.

On a Trial Basis

The dogs placed in the miscellaneous dog category are basically on a trial period with the AKC. Having AKC papers to prove your dog is recognized as a purebred is important, especially for breeders. The potential owner of a new puppy, in general, will pay more for a dog and will be more trusting of a breeder who is AKC registered and can provide the paperwork to prove it.

Choosing a Miscellaneous Dog Breed

Regardless of whether these dogs make the grade or not, they still make great companion dogs and should not be overlooked by potential owners because of their AKC ranking. These dogs need love, affection and a safe place to call home, just like any other.
