Read About Bird Cage Stands

Use bird cage stands to hoist your bird off the ground and keep him out of harms way. Here's all you need to know about bird cage stands.

What are bird cage stands?

Bird cage stands are just what they sound like. They are a stand, either based on the floor or attached to the ceiling, that support the bird cage. Generally speaking there are two kinds of bird cage stands.

The first kind of bird cage stand is one that stands on the ground and has a platform on top where the cage is placed. These types of bird cage stands can support large and small birds. When you look for these kind of bird cage stands, you need to make sure that they have three or four sturdy legs. An unbalanced bird cage stand is not safe for the bird.

Other free standing bird cage stands have a hook at the top where the cage can hang, rather than having a platform where you would place the cage. These bird cage stands are for smaller birds. Often times these stands have custom made cages that actually come with the stand.

The other kind of bird cage stands get attached to the ceiling. Large birds, such as a macaw or any other member of the parrot family, generally don't sit in these cages because the birds are too heavy. These bird cage stands are great for little birds, but remember, if you have a cage attached to the ceiling it's harder to get to the bird. This is good if you have a cat, but can be annoying if you constantly need to get in the cage.

It's important that bird cage stands fit the bird and the cage. Mismatched stands and cages can cause for cage instability, which is not safe for the bird.

Where do I get bird cage stands?

Bird cage stands can generally be purchased at bird specialty stores. You can also find them at pet stores and on-line. Before you go bird cage stand shopping, take measurements of your bird cage. As mentioned before, it's not a good idea to have a stand and cage that do not fit well together.

Are bird cage stands a must?

In a word, no. Bird cage stands are an accessory to a cage that you can choose to buy or take a pass on. They're helpful if you need to find a place to put the cage, but remember that cages can also be put on shelves, bookcases or any other high, secure area that will hold the weight of the cage. Bird cage stands are not a necessity.
