Why use a Dog Chain?
If you've just adopted a new dog you'll want to start training him to walk on a lead and heel right away. Many experts agree that chain-slip collars, also known as check chain or choke collars, are effective training tools when used correctly. These Dog Chain collars are especially effective for strong-willed dogs that may pull on or resist walking on a lead or who don't respond to training wearing a traditional collar. Dog Chains are also inexpensive, strong and easy to find.
How to choose the right Dog Chain
Don't go too cheap. The first thing to look for in a Dog Chain is that it is finely polished and that the links move easily, allowing you to use the collar without hurting your pet. Take your dog with you to the store to ensure you get the proper size Dog Chain. To make sure you've got the correct size chain, stand to your dog's right and loop the chain through the link and hold the collar in the shape of a "P." The straight part of the "P" must go across the top of your dog's neck. You should have enough length so that when the chain goes slack it is loose around your dog's neck, but not so loose that he can slip out of it. A good rule of thumb is to purchase a chain that is 2 1/2-3 inches longer than your dog's neck measurement. Don't put any tags on a Dog Chain collar as they can impede the chain's movement. Dog Chain collars should only be used for training sessions.
Training with a Dog Chain
To use a Dog Chain properly, employ a quick jerk-and-release motion. Constant 
pressure on the collar is dangerous and should be avoided. To teach your dog to heel, something that you can and should teach him right away, take him out for a walk with his Dog Chain collar and leather lead. Each time he walks ahead of you, swiftly jerk the lead to tighten the collar and then quickly release it while issuing the heel command. Before long, your dog will heel without your guidance.
Proper use of a Dog Chain can be tricky. A few sessions with a professional dog trainer can be very helpful in learning the correct technique. All the time and effort you put into training your dog will be worth it. Having a well-trained dog can be one of life's most rewarding relationships.
